     Joseph Elam, son of John Elam and Jane (?),, was born circa 20 February 1814 at Birstall, Yorkshire, England.5,6 Joseph Elam was the son of John Elam and Jane (?).3,4 He was also known as Thomas The death certificate of Jane Elam states that her father's name was Thomas. However, there were no Thomas Elam's in Wisconsin at the time of her birth. I believe that his name was actually Joseph..7

Joseph Elam married Mary Thornton on 19 October 1835 at Birstall, Yorkshire.8,9,10

In 1850, Joseph Elam appeared on the United States Census, at Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin, In 1850, Joseph Elam was listed as a farmer and had $500 real estate.11

On May 15, 1857, Joseph Elam signed a land purchase agreement for 40 acres in Wisconsin.12

Joseph Elam died between 1860 and 1870. Joseph Elam did not appear on the 1870 census with the rest of his family.13

In 1860, Joseph Elam appeared on the United States Census, at Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin, In 1860, Joseph Elam was listed as a farmer with $3000 real estate and $400 personal estate.14
