In 2009, when Peter Arnott was generously sending materials he had been able to find about the Arnott family, he wrote a brief synopsis about his own life as background.

"...although clever as a young boy and good at most subjects except English, he failed as a student, preferring teenager diversions, a disappointment, an opportunity missed byt not subsequently regretted. Military service was a requirement of the time and he spent three years in Ireland and mostly Malaya where he had a cushy number. On exit he took up a job selling life assurance, moving to Lanarkshire and then Ayrshire...he moved into the world of engineering after suitable training. As employment was difficult in the early 1970s, he moved to Cambridge with his family as an instrument technician and the manufacture of agrochemicals...Taking early retirement before the age of 60, he soon after returned to his home county."5
