Jane (Jean) Strachan, daughter of William Strachan and Catharine Black, was born circa 16 June 1816 at Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. Jane (Jean) Strachan was the daughter of William Strachan and Catharine Black. Jane (Jean) Strachan and James Arnot were associated; There apparently was never a marriage between James Arnot and Jean Strachan, though they did have two sons, James and William.2

In 1841, Jane (Jean) Strachan appeared on the Scotland Census, at Moody Street, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, In 1841, the James Arnot/t family was not located as a unit. However, there is, on the same street, a young William Arnott (age 1), and a Jane Strachan and her mother, Catherine (Black) Strachan. This is probably the right family. Because James married in 1842, the theory that his first wife, Jane Strachan, had passed away, seems not to be the case. It is now believed that, though James had probably two sons with Jane Strachan, they probably had never married.3 She and William Paton were associated before 1851.4

In 1851, Jane (Jean) Strachan appeared on the Scotland Census, at Dunfermline Parish, Fife, Scotland.5

In 1861, Jane (Jean) Strachan appeared on the Scotland Census, at Dunfermline Parish, Fife.6

Jane (Jean) Strachan died after 1861. Jane or Jean Strachan is still found on the 1861 Scotland Census.7
