Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth

     Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth, daughter of William Jackson Ainsworth and Louisiana C. Welborn,, was born on 16 September 1898 at Mississippi. Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth was the daughter of William Jackson Ainsworth and Louisiana C. Welborn. She was also known as Betty.¹

Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth appeared on the United States census of 1910 in the household of Pendleton Clay Welborn at Stringer, Jasper County, Mississippi.²

Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth married William Adkins Stevens, son of William Archie Stevens and Anna Bell Travis, circa 1917 at Mississippi.³ Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth and William Adkins Stevens were divorced circa 1922.¹

Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth appeared on the United States census of 1920 in the household of William Archie Stevens at Jasper County, Mississippi.⁴

Beulah raised her two daughters as a single parent. She was a beautician and worked until her youngest daughter graduated from high school. She bought a home in Denver on Downing street near Colfax. During the depression she was able to continue to support herself and her family because she said that women would always spend any money they got on getting her hair fixed. A popular hairdo at that time was called the Marcelle (sp?)

The story is that Beulah and Eula were raised by their aunt Brack after their mother, Louisianna died. However, in researching I have found Beulah and her sister living in the home of their Welborn grandparents. I believe that they, rather than an aunt, raised them.¹

In the 1927 City Directory of El Paso, Texas, is the following listing:

     Stevens, Beulah (wid. W.A.) waitress Modern Cafe, residence 17, 514 Buchanan.

The Modern Cafe was in the basement of the Mills Building.⁵



In the 1928 City Directory of El Paso, Texas, is the following listing:

     Stevens, Beulah (wid W.A.) waitress Modern Cafe, residence R, 526 W. Missouri.

Betty was not listed in the El Paso City Directory in 1925 or 1926.⁵

In 1930, Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth appeared on the United States Census, at North Beach, Nueces County, Texas.⁶

In 1935 Betty Stevens is listed in the Denver, Colorado City Directory as working at Ellsworth & Stevens, 244 Broadway. She was in partnership in a beauty parlor with Gene Ellsworth. Gene married Bill Thompson later and stayed friends with the Stevens/ Arnott families until her death.

Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth married Charles Joseph Dillon circa 1938.

In 1940, Beulah Stevens was listed in the Denver, Colorado City Directory as still working in the beauty parlor. Her address in Denver was 393 S. Downing.

Listed next door to her was the Beeler family: Ruth Beeler, Aunt Toddy, Junie, Lois, anf Franie. it was with this family Alice Joyce Stevens (researcher's mother and Betty Stevens' daughter) lived after Beulah Ainsworth Stevens remarried and moved to San Antonio, Texas.

Beulah Elizabeth Ainsworth died on 21 December 1969 at San Antonio, Bexer County, Texas, at age 71. Hr death was from cardiac arrest, due to acute congestive heart failure.⁷ She was buried at 746 Castroville Rd., block 33, lot 200, grave 3, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.
